The State College school board is expected to formalize Monday a commitment to plan for State College Area High School upgrades.

A resolution on the board’s Monday meeting agenda calls for a start shortly in that planning process. The resolution also outlines board commitments to prepare for additional elementary-school improvements and to discuss possible new uses for some older school facilities.

‘By adopting this resolution, (board members will be) making it open, transparent and public that these are things they’re committed to in Phase II’ in the District-Wide Facilities Master Plan, said district spokeswoman Julie Miller. She said the board wants ‘to feel comfortable knowing that the community is aware’ of what’s happened so far, what’s happening now and what will happen next in the facilities plan.

The board unanimously adopted that measure in June 2009, ranking facilities priorities in the school district. Phase I, already well under way, comprises planning for Memorial Field renovations and for three elementary-school construction projects — including those in Boalsburg and Ferguson Township.

Phase II is to involve immediate planning for upgrades to State High; preparation, within 15 months, for other elementary-school improvements; and ongoing conversations about school properties that could be ‘repurposed.’

Those properties include the Panorama Village and College Heights elementary buildings, the old high-school building on West Fairmount Avenue and the administration building on West Nittany Avenue, according to the resolution.

Through the resolution, the board also would commit ‘to holding a public referendum to issue electoral debt for upgrades to the State College Area High School at an appropriate time.

‘The board will determine whether any other projects should be included in said referendum as planning progresses,’ the resolution reads.
