Friday, July 8

Movies 

 ‘Larry Crowne,’ starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, is among the movies showing at the College 9 Theatre and the UEC 12 Theater. Hanks plays a middle-aged man who goes back to college as he tries to reinvent himself.

At the Cinema 6 Discount Theater, a horror movie titled ‘Insidious’ is among the films playing this weekend. It follows a family as it tries to keep evil spirits from trapping its comatose child.

In downtown State College, the State Theatre is scheduled to show the classic ‘The Philadelphia Story’  several times Friday.

Meanwhile, ‘Despicable Me,’ starring Steve Carrell, is scheduled to be shown at 8 p.m. at the Tussey Mountain Amphitheater as part of the Outdoor Films at Tussey Mountain series.

Community Events

The Logan Fire Company No. 1 Carnival will continue Friday and Saturday in Bellefonte. Ride Night at the carnival will begin about 6:30 p.m. Friday.

The ninth annual Life for Life fundraiser, put on by Penn State football players to benefit the fight against kidney cancer, will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. at Holuba Hall, on the University Park campus. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. Earlier Life for Life coverage on StateCollege.com is posted here.

Live Performances

The local acoustic trio Biscuit Jam will perform at Music Night at the Marsh, at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center, to begin at 6:30 p.m. Special guest appearances are expected, too. 

The Performing Arts School of Central Pa. will present the ballet ‘Peter and the Wolf’ at 7:30 p.m. at Mount Nittany Middle School.

In College Township, the Lemont Concert Series will continue at 7:30 p.m. with a performance by Dreams and Bones. The concerts are held on the Village Green.

The Arena Bar and Grill will host a Punk Rock Sock Hop starting about 7 p.m.

In Boalsburg, State College Community Theatre will present the play ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ at 8 p.m. at the Boal Barn Playhouse. The production is scheduled to continue through Saturday.

Food

 The State College Downtown Farmers Market continues on Locust Lane (across from the HUB lawn) between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue. The market is held Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Most of the fruits and vegetables sold are seasonal. Some of the vendors sell baked goods, canned goods and crafts all season long. All vendors produce or grow what they sell.

Bars and Clubs

The Autoport in State College will have happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. Keena and Larry will provide entertainment starting at 8 p.m.

At Bar Bleu in State College, happy hour will run from 9 to 11 p.m. Lowjack will play starting at 10:30 p.m.

In Toftrees, the Down Under Steakhouse will host Keith Randall starting at 8 p.m. and happy hour from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. And at the Gingerbread Man in State College, DJ Boner will entertain starting at 10 p.m.; happy hour will run from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Saturday, July 9

Movies

‘Meek’s Cutoff,’ a 2010 film, is set in 1845 on the Oregon Trail. It will show at 4 p.m. at the State Theatre. Additional showings are scheduled through July 13. 

Community Events

Two children’s storytime events are scheduled for Saturday morning — one each at Barnes and Noble in College Township and at Schlow Centre Region Library in downtown State College.

 

Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, in Barree Township, Huntingdon County, will host a Birds of Prey Show at 1 p.m. Another one is scheduled for Sunday at the same time. 

Sports

The State College Spikes will take on the Batavia Muckdogs at 7:05 p.m. at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Sunday, July 10

Live Music

South Hills School of Business and Technology will host the Bavarian Stompers in the next concert of the school’s Music Picnic series.The picnic is scheduled to start at 5 p.m., with music to follow at 6 p.m. The gathering will be held on the school grounds on Waupelani Drive in State College.

Tommy Wareham, on piano and guitar, will play in Bellefonte’s Summer Sounds from the Gazebo series. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in Talleyrand Park. Organizers suggest that attendees bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Sports

The State College Spikes will take on the Batavia Muckdogs in a 6:05 p.m. game at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
