Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey won a second term, defeating Democratic challenger Katie McGinty in what was a tight race viewed as a battleground for party control of the Senate.
McGinty had held a slight edge in the most recent Real Clear Politics polling average, but with 99 percent of the state’s precincts reporting Toomey had garnered 104,000 more votes and a 48.9 percent to 47.2 percent margin.
In Centre County, Toomey won by a margin of 47.91 percent to 46.20.
The race between Toomey, a former banker and U.S. Congressman, and McGinty, former chief of staff to Gov. Tom Wolf, was the most expensive in senate campaign in history with combined spending of $155 million
With Toomey’s win, the Associated Press projected Republicans to retain control of the Senate.
