A large number of emergency responders and vehicles will be on hand at University Park Airport tonight (May 23), but it won’t be a cause for alarm.

The airport will be conducting a full-scale emergency response exercise involving emergency personnel from Penn State and municipalities throughout Centre County. The Federal Aviation Administration requires all commercial airports to conduct such a drill once every three years.

Crews will stage equipment and personnel on Crosswinds Drive, off of High Tech Road, beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m. with the exercise starting at 7 p.m. at the airport.

Local police and fire departments, emergency medical services, hazmat teams and other local, state and federal government and community agencies, along with University Park Airport’s on-site aircraft rescue and fire fighting crews will participate in the exercise.

The airport will remain open and operating under normal schedule throughout the drill.
