For the 20th year, residents from across Centre County will spend Earth Day improving local communities during the annual Watershed Cleanup Day on Saturday.
From 8 a.m.-noon volunteers will visit sites throughout the county’s watersheds to remove trash and litter. A celebratory picnic for all volunteers will follow at Spring Creek Park in Houserville.
Last year, 380 volunteers participated, removing 47 tons of trash from around Centre County. Since the event was first established in 1997, volunteers have removed 5.8 million pounds of waste from streams, roadways, sinkholes and illegal dump sites. Clearwater Conservancy, which leads the event in partnership with the Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority and Centre Region municipalities, hopes to collect about 50 tons of trash this year.
Groups, families or individuals can sign up to take part in the cleanup at www.clearwaterconservancy.org. Volunteers can suggest a cleanup site or be assigned to a site, and all materials are provided.
