The biggest snow storm of the winter season is making travel tough Monday morning.
AccuWeather says one to three inches of snow fell overnight, but that’s just the start.
The National Weather Service has extended a Winter Weather Advisory until 7 a.m. Tuesday.
State College Area Schools are closed Monday due to the weather.
Schlow library is on a three hour delay and will open at noon.
“We’re going to continue to see snow throughout [Monday],” says AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys. “It won’t be steady. We’re getting light to moderate snow through the day. We’re going to see 4 to 6 inches total.”
That means getting around will be difficult since many roads could be treacherous. “Travel is going to be very tough,” says Roys. “You’re not going to really see the asphalt. Roads are going to be snow covered. Travel is going to be tough today.”
PennDot says it has 5,400 equipment operators across the state, who will be working around the clock during the storm. You can get real time travel information by calling 511 or visiting www.511PA.com.
Area residents have been gearing up for the storm for the past couple of days. Snow shovels, snow blowers and ice melt are prominently displayed at area hardware stores.
Larry Moore, the assistant store manager at Lowes says business has been pretty steady. “Anytime we get a snowfall people are in buying snow blowers shovels and things like that.”
At times on Monday, it may appear the snow is ending but that probably won’t last very long. In fact, snow will continue to fall through Tuesday. “It’s going to start to taper off late Monday night, says Roys, addding, “By the start of the morning commute Tuesday snow should be tapering off. It’s a long duration storm.”
It’s also going to be on the chilly side. High temperatures are not expected rise above 30 degrees for the rest of the week. In fact, low temperatures on Friday and Saturday could be in the single digits.
It may not look like it but we’re getting off easy. This same clipper system is expected to produce blizzard conditions across New England.
