Penn State’s defensive depth continues to dwindle in the buildup to the Pinstripe Bowl.
On Monday, cornerback A.J. Harris’ profile was removed from the team’s online roster, with multiple reports saying he intends to enter the transfer portal next month. He becomes the fifth Nittany Lion with intent to transfer, joining tight end Joey Schlaffer, cornerback Elliot Washington II, offensive lineman Alex Birchmeier and defensive end Chaz Coleman. Additionally, defensive tackle Zane Durant, safety Zakee Wheatley, left guard Vega Ioane and running back Nick Singleton have opted out of the bowl game.
Harris has started the last two seasons after transferring in from Georgia and was once viewed as a first-round draft prospect. After a lackluster season, Harris saw his stock drop and was even benched after giving up a touchdown against Northwestern.
Harris totaled 33 tackles this season but allowed 23 completions on 25 targets for 286 yards and two touchdowns, per PFF. Harris earned poor coverage grades down the stretch, include a season-low 43.0 against Rutgers to close out the season.
This likely means more snaps for freshman Daryus Dixson, who often subbed in for Harris throughout the season and earned a starting role toward the end of the season. He’ll likely play opposite Audavion Collins, with Zion Tracy manning the slot.
