The Chazmanian Devil is hitting the portal.
After just one season at Penn State, defensive end Chaz Coleman plans to enter the transfer portal, he confirmed in a post on X Thursday afternoon. He becomes the third Nittany Lion to declare intent to transfer, joining tight end Joey Schlaffer and cornerback Elliot Washington II.
“After much thought and consideration, I have decided to enter the transfer portal this coming January to pursue other opportunities,” he wrote. “I’d like thank James Franklin and his staff for believing in me and teaching me what it means to believe in myself.”
Coleman had a strong true freshman season, burning his redshirt and accumulating eight tackles, a strip sack and a pass breakup. He graded as Penn State’s second-best pass rusher this season according to PFF, registering 15 pressures on 70 pass rush attempts. Coleman missed three games with injury late in the year, but returned for the season finale against Rutgers and had one tackle.
Coleman, a former four-star recruit from Ohio, was viewed as a key player for new head coach Matt Campbell to retain, but he’ll instead explore other options.
He received heavy interest from Ohio State late in his recruitment, after he was committed to the Nittany Lions. Virginia Tech is also a school to watch, as Coleman may opt to follow Franklin to Blacksburg.
