Carl E. Hill, 84, of Bellefonte, passed away peacefully at Wynwood House-State College, on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Born on September 2, 1940, in Nanticoke, PA, he was the son of the late Herman and Mary (Robbins) Hill. On August 24, 1963, he
married Janet F. Nichols. Janet passed away on November 14, 2011.
Carl was a 1958 graduate of Berwick Area High School, 1962 graduate of Lycoming College, and a 1965 graduate of Wesley Theological College. Once ordained, Carl ministered many United Methodist congregations spanning over his 40+ year career.
After he retired, Carl was involved with local United Methodist Churches, filling in as interim pastor when and wherever needed. He was a member of the Downtown State College Rotary Club and served as District Chaiman for Rotary Exchange Students for many years. Besides organizing students from all over the world to come to the area, he has helped send local students out to the world. He was a host parent to over 20 Rotary Exchange Students, including Dr. Jorge Gonzalez, who stayed with Janet and Carl for over two years and throughout college. He remained in contact with many of the students well after his retirement.
Carl was an excellent cook, enjoyed entertaining in his home and had no problem creating a tailgate party for 50 or more people attending Penn State home games. He enjoyed traveling, going for long hikes in the mountains, and socializing. He could pick up a conversation with anyone and when you walked away, you were his friend.
Carl is survived by his two sons: Wesley J. Hill and his husband, Jhonny Escalante, of San Diego, CA and Michael C. Hill and his wife, Kathleen, of Alum Bank, PA. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Kia Marie and Nicoletta, and seven great grandchildren. His grandson Shane preceded him in death in 2023.
There will be a time of visitation on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 10am – 12noon, followed by a memorial service at Mount Nittany United Methodist Church in Lemont with Pastor Michael Swimley officiating. Burial will be private.
