Penn State Football: Nittany Lions Unranked in Preseason Coaches Poll

no description

Penn State football is not ranked in the preseason USA Today/AFCA Coaches Poll released on Monday afternoon, marking the first time the Nittany Lions did not start the season ranked in the poll since 2016.

Receiving 246 votes, Penn State is effectively the No. 27 team in the poll, trailing Iowa which garnered 248 votes to just miss out on cracking the Top 25

Ohio State once again tops Big Ten teams in the Top 25, coming in at No. 2 just behind Alabama. Michigan sits at No. 6 in the nation coming off its own conference title win last year, while Michigan State and Wisconsin are the only other Big Ten teams in the Top 25 coming in at No. 14 and No. 20 respectively.

Penn State’s Week 3 opponent, Auburn, is also unranked.

Among other programs of interest, fellow Keystone State school Pitt is ranked No. 16, despite losing both its offensive coordinator and eventual Pittsburgh Steelers’ draft choice and quarterback Kenny Pickett. The Panthers enter their eighth season under head coach Pat Narduzzi.

Future Big Ten school USC enters the poll at No. 15 while Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz’s former school Miami hits the Top 25 at No. 17.

Former Penn State quarterback Will Levis and Kentucky are slotted in at No. 21.

The last time Penn State was unranked in the preseason poll, the Nittany Lions went on to win the Big Ten but were left out of the College Football Playoffs in favor of Ohio State, who Penn State beat during the regular season.

The Associated Press is set to release its Top 25 next Monday.
