Movies

‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ – from Marvel Comics, a prequel to the upcoming ‘Avengers.’ Steve Rogers, after being deemed unfit for military service, volunteers for a top-secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America’s ideals, at UEC 12 Theater.

‘Friends with Benefits’ – Trying to avoid the clichés of Hollywood romantic comedies, Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis) soon discover, however, that adding sex to their friendship leads to complications, at College 9 Theatre.

Friday Favorites at The State Theatre features ‘Sleepless in Seattle,’ starring Tom Hanks, Ross Mallinger, Meg Ryan and Bill Pullman. This light romantic comedy was inspired by the 1957 film ‘An Affair to Remember.’ Hanks stars as widower and single father Sam. When Sam’s son, Jonah, calls into a talk radio program looking for a new mother, Sam ends up getting on the phone and laments about his lost love. Thousands of miles away, Annie hears the program and immediately falls in love with Sam, despite the fact that she has never met him and that she is engaged to humdrum Walter. Believing they are meant to be together, Annie sets out for Seattle to meet Sam, who, meanwhile, contends with an onslaught of letters from available women equally touched by his phone call.

This week’s offering at the Tussey Mountain Ski Area’s ‘Movies on the Mountain’ series is ‘Jurassic Park,’ the Speilberg classic that introduced the world, face-to-face, with the mighty Dinosaurs. The movie starts at dusk, but go early and enjoy go-kart rides from 6-8 p.m. Admission is just $1.

More complete movie listings throughout the weekend are available on StateCollege.com.

Food

The State College Downtown Farmers Market resumes post-Arts Festival on Locust Lane (across from the HUB lawn) between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue. The market is held Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Most of the fruits and vegetables sold are seasonal. Some of the vendors sell baked goods, canned goods and crafts all season long. All vendors produce or grow what they sell.
