TGIF: State College Weekend Events for March 30-April 1

Happy Friday, Happy Valley!

It’s Easter weekend and there are egg hunts aplenty around the area. You’ll also find theater, opera, Wild About Animals, the Bunny Blitz 5k, a special youth golf event and baseball at Medlar Field with special promotions.

We’ve compiled some of the weekend highlights below.

FRIDAY

Easter Egg Hunt
From 3:30 to 4 p.m. (or until eggs run out) Centre County Library and Historical Museum will host an Easter Egg Hunt at the Bellefonte Community Garden, behind the museum, 200 N. Allegheny St., Bellefonte.

Baseball
Penn State baseball opens its Big Ten home schedule with Purdue at 6:30 p.m. at Medlar Field. Friday is Dollar Dog Night.

The Laramie Project
Penn State Centre Stage’s Off Centre productions presents the 2001 play ‘The Laramie Project,’ based on the true story of the response to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyo. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center.

The Breath of Life
The Next Stage Theatre Company presents David Hare’s bitingly funny play, which originally premiered in London with Judi Dench and Maggie Smith.Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in the Attic of the State Theatre. 

SATURDAY

Easter Egg Hunts

– Christ Community Church, 200 Ellis Place, hosts a community Easter egg hunt for all children in fifth grade or younger at 9 a.m. In addition to the egg hunt, there will be games, prizes, raffles, a bounce house and magic show.

– State College Evangelical Free Church, 1243 Blue Course Drive, in conjunction with State College Alliance and Centre Church, hosts from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. an Easter egg hunt with eggs filled with candy and special prizes, as well as games, music and entertainment. 

– Penn State Panhellenic and IFC will hold an Easter egg hunt from 10 a.m. to noon at the side lawn of the Business Building, corner of Shortlidge Road and East Park Avenue. Hunts will be held in waves every 30 to 45 minutes.

– Fairbrook United Methodist Church, 4201 W. Whitehall Rd., Pennsylvania Furnace, holds an Easter egg hunt starting at 1 p.m. followed by family activities. Bring a basket or bag.

– Centre Region Parks and Rec’s 58th annual Easter egg hunt moves to a new location this year — Oak Hall Regional Park. Family activities, games and concession stand with warm drinks start at 1 p.m., the Easter Bunny arrives at 1:30 p.m. and the egg hunt starts at 2 p.m. with multiple age groups for ages 2 through 9.

– Bellefonte Community Easter Egg Hunt begins at 1 p.m. in Talleyrand Park. All children 12 and under are invited to participate and the park is divided into age groups. In addition to the egg hunt, games, refreshments and a visit from the Easter Bunny are among the day’s highlights.

Bunny Blitz 5K
The YMCA of Centre County’s annual Bunny Blitz 5k trail run and walk is set for 9:30 a.m., starting at Harpster Ballfield, Ballfield Road, Pennsylvania Furnace. The route is a private course that meanders through the woods of Spruce Creek Valley.

Wild About Animals
Centre Wildlife Care joins with Penn State’s Small and Exotic Animal Club to hold the 19th annual ‘Wild About Animals’ expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Snider Agricultural Arena at University Park. Admission is $8 and free for children 5 and under.

Golfin’ on the Green 
The Penn State Golf Courses will host an eco-friendly, spring-themed event from 1 to 4 p.m. The event is open to the community and is for children 5 to 10 years of age. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in fun activities centered on golf. Così fan tutte
The State Theatre presents the Metropolitan Opera in HD broadcast of Mozart’s comedy ‘Così fan tutte,’ at 12:55 p.m.

The Wolves
Penn State Centre Stage’s Off Centre productions presents ‘The Wolves,’ Sarah DeLappe’s highly acclaimed 2016 play which tells the story of nine high school girls on an indoor soccer team and the issues they face at a pivotal moment in their lives. The performance is at 2 p.m. in the Downtown Theatre Center.

Baseball
The Nittany Lions take on Purdue in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.. Game one includes $10 Picnic at the Park and ‘Good Riddance to Winter’ with yard games and summer music. Game two, rescheduled from Sunday due to forecasted weather, $10 Easter brunch at the concession stands, post-game Easter egg hunt, and post-game Kids Run the Bases. Youth 12 and under in their Little League jersey will receive free admission.

Community Easter Breakfast and Egg Hunt
Following 7 a.m. sunrise Easter service, St. John’s UCC, 218 North Church Street in Boalsburg, hosts a breakfast at 8 a.m. followed by  Easter egg hunt at 9:15 a.m.
