A Virginia woman is facing charges including aggravated assault after police say she kicked an emergency medical technician in the head, spit on a police officer and fought police and Mount Nittany Medical Center staff following a trespassing call.
State College Police responded to a call at 1:13 a.m. on Monday from a man who said he met a woman, later identified as Teana Dobbins of North Chesterfield, Va., at Indigo night club on Friday and that she had spent the weekend at his Patterson Street home. The man told police that the two had been drinking all day Monday and Dobbins ‘was becoming very loud and out of control,’ according to an affidavit of probable cause.
The man told police he was worried Dobbins, 22, would bother his neighbors and that he had to go to work in the morning so he told her to leave. After she did, he allegedly heard banging on his porch and found his screen door was broken and a chair had been thrown from the porch into the yard.
While police searched the area for Dobbins, she returned to the house with visible injuries to her face, according to court documents. The man called police to say she had returned and that he was afraid she would accuse him of the injuries. When two officers returned to the house, he said he offered for Dobbins to sleep at his house ‘but she wouldn’t calm down or go to bed and was out of control.’
According to police, Dobbins was visibly intoxicated, swaying as she tried to stand. She allegedly had glassy eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol about her.
‘Dobbins was ranting incoherent statements and staggering around the porch,’ according to court documents.
According to police she had a swollen lip, scrapes on her face, was missing a shoe and had dirt on her coat and pants. She eventually told police she fell, and an ambulance was called to evaluate her for intoxication and injuries.
Police say Dobbins told them she traveled to State College from New York by bus. She would not confirm how she met the man but said that she did not know anyone else who lives in the area.
Dobbins allegedly refused to comply with police requests for her to sit down or remain in one place. When EMTs arrived, police say she refused to answer any questions and yelled obscenities at police and EMTs.
After she allegedly refused to to stay seated, she refused to put her hands behind her back to be handcuffed and pulled away from police who were trying to place her in the ambulance, according to the affidavit. While Dobbins allegedly screamed repeatedly that she would not go, police eventually handcuffed her and carried her to the ambulance.
Police say she continued to resist, kicking at police and EMTs, and that she continued to fight as they strapped her to a stretcher. She was then placed in the ambulance, where police say she kicked an EMT in the head. At that that point she was placed in a hobble restraint.
On the way to the hospital, police allege, Dobbins spit on an officer and a spit hood was placed on her. At the hospital she allegedly screamed that she was ‘being raped by doctors and staff’ and continued to fight police and hospital staff. Three security personnel and multiple hospital staff allegedly were needed to restrain the 5-foot, 100-pound Dobbins and she continued screaming until sedated with medication.
In addition to the felony aggravated assault charge, Dobbins also faces misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct and summary counts of disorderly conduct, criminal trespass and harassment.
Dobbins was arraigned before District Judge Steven Lachman and held on $20,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 9.
